Demand Event Sustainability Data
The Experiential Marketing Measurement Coalition recently published a new playbook focused on standardized environmental sustainability metrics. We stand behind the approach and hope to drive broad industry adoption.
But there’s a fundamental challenge which we can’t tackle through standardization, and that is the lack of consistently credible data from the event supply chain.
The calculation of impact metrics like CO2e per participant requires an accurate collection of carbon emission data from travel and hospitality companies, shippers and more. But the hard truth is that many of these organizations aren’t being asked to supply this data, and therefore they haven’t built tracking systems and reporting approaches into their workflows.
It’s incumbent on event professionals to ask suppliers for carbon footprint and landfill waste data, likely the only way - short of legislative mandates - that we can expect to see real change (and we suspect government action is unlikely anytime soon).
So, we’re issuing a rallying cry to all event marketers: Request emissions data; ask for landfill waste data. If enough of us ask often enough, our collective demands will be met.
